No, its not safe. Throws are only a minor concern in grappling. In wrestling I was picked six feet off the ground and landed directly on my head.
Sounds bad, right? Very rarely will you receive brain damage from force, chokes are much more dangerous. Most chokes target the brain's blood supply rather than air.
Why? Because it takes far less time to get an effect out of it. When you strive the brain of blood you are taking away its nutrients (including some oxygen), which can kill brain cells even when done with caution.
All martial arts that spar will have a risk of brain damage. Kicks/punches to the head, throws, chokeholds, etc. An art like Jujitsu has less chance of brain damage than boxing, despite all of the chokeholds. Mostly because in Jujitsu you stop right after the person either taps out or passes out, restoring blood supply in seconds.
In boxing once you get punched, you can't take it back. And all you do in boxing is get punched, while Jujitsu has joint-locks and other targets than the brain.
As long as you don't let your ego act for you, it's very safe. I read a statistic once; you're seven times more likely to break a bone playing soccer than doing grappling/jiu jitsu. It's also important to realize that if someone there is being a jerk (in lack of more child friendly terms) you don't have to roll (the jiu jitsu equivalent of sparing) with him.
You should always feel safe.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
