We have open and free societies and they don't, simple as that.
There are many reasons why none muslims are not allowed in mecca and the most obvious of them is that they are NOT muslim. You can be rich, poor, black, white, brown, male . Female, young, old, a street sweeper or a prince, as long as you are muslim, you can stand side by side in Mecca and perform your duty to Allah(swt) without any worldly distraction.
Would you not agree that in Gods eyes no matter who you think you are, you are equal, all that He asks is that you worship Him alone and believe in His messengers (prophets) So , Unless you can say that you Worship God alone, and Muhammad (pbuh) is His messenger, What reason do you have for wanting to go to Mecca? None at all that will be acceptable to God. As for mosques, you are welcome to visit any mosques at a reasonable time and you will be welcome as long as your visit is peaceful and you are dressed modestly. You don't have to be muslim to visit a mosque.
Mosques are only being built in non muslim countries , where there is large enough populations of muslims. And the same you will find in muslims countries, where there is a large enough population of a particular faith, they can and do build their own centres of worship ( churches, synagogues, temples....) So there is no double standard! As for the Vatican, its not really a christian place of worship,( as a holy place).
Jerusalem is far more holier then the Vatican, The main reason people go there is to see the sights and because the pope resides there, If the pope lived in New york, then christians/ catholics would go there instead, So the actual site of the vatican has no religious relevance except that it is the place where the popes/ heads of the church have resided.(And a museum for christian antiquity) In fact, it has nothing to do with Jesus(as) or God and there is no mention of it in the Bible! So there is NO comparison between Mecca and the Vatican. Just to put things in perspective, there are many institutions everywhere, especially in the west, where neither I nor you would be allowed to go without specific qualifications or membership of that institution.
( Government buildings, military camps, research centres,,,,,or private clubs) So being barred from visiting a place is not unique to Mecca. If you are a reasonable person , I am sure you will understand some if not all the reasons above and I hope it answered the question.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
