It is a power safety move. When you are heating your home in the winter time and maybe the heat gets turned up on a very cold day, the temperature could go higher that where the set-point for cooling is set on the air conditioner. The two devices would be in conflict with each other.
The heating system trying to warm the house and the A/C trying to cool the house both at the same time. With the breaker turned off to the A/C this will not happen and the house will heat up to where you set the heating thermostat. Most large commercial and industrial businesses have interlocks between the two systems so that only one system can work at a time.
