Why was the SS feared?

The SS was feared because they cheated. They rubbed blood on themselves and played dead. Then got up and shot soldiers when they past.

They were just bullies and they were not very good fighters There are two distinct facets to the question. Firstly the SS were the secret police who administered the death camps and so on. Fear was very much part & parcel of what they were involved in.

Secondly the Waffen SS formed an elite adjunct to the Whermacht: And indeed these soldiers were rightly feared, not as above because they were cowardly bullies, but because they were trained to a very high standard in warfare. They had the lions share of much of the best equipment and used it with devastating effect in many instances. The war in the East against the Soviets was a great struggle and atrocities were common on both sides.SS Panzer units were used to great effect, sadly for example as the British Airborne were to experience in September 1944 at Arnhem.
