Why Wetland Conservation?

In Minnesota, over 52% of our original wetlands have been lost due to building and development. Wetlands have been drained and filled to make way for houses, roads, and farmland. However, Boettcher Farm Preserve has added back to the earth and is considered a Wetland Conservation Environment where the original wetland territory has been restored.

It is especially important that people who live on them, own, or control wetlands understand their value, preserve them, and use good management practices to protect them. What are Wetlands? Wetlands are a lowland area, such as a marsh or swamp that is saturated with moisture, especially when regarded as the natural habitat of wildlife.

The importance of wetlands is to preserve bio-diversity. Wetlands prevent erosion. Wetlands are also flexible storm water storages that act as biological and mechanical filters which prevent pollutants from entering lakes, rivers, and groundwater.

They provide important habitat for birds, animals, and plants. ... more.
