Why would pharmacy keep activated charcoal behind counter?

Similar questions: pharmacy activated charcoal counter.

It used when someone swallows something they shouldn't. Example: A child gets hold of a bottle of Tylenol. Tylenol is large does is poison.

They'd pump the child's stomach or make them vomit and then give them activated charcoal to absorb the stuft.

It can be used to absorb anything you take, but want out of your body fast. I had some.....can get from vitamin companies.

That is used to induce vomiting when necessary.

Keep it behind counter possibly so people with eating disorders cannot get to it.

Thanks all, drugstore. Com sells activated charcoal brand-name Natures Way brand 100 ct. For $6.99.

Has 17 good reviews using it for bloating, gas, etc. Says take 2 capsules after a meal. I was on an alternative medicine website reading about it and the benefits of it. Originally, guess it was used in hospitals for poison problems.

Not as much anymore. My out of state doc recommended it on a list of supplements he gave me for some health problems. Just now reading about what it can be used for.

Thanks:)Thanks! KiwiMom 1 month ago .

The only reason I have found is that it needs to be administered by a doctor; it's not for home use:"Activated charcoal is usually given by a doctor. It is not a substance to be used at home. Doctors determine the dose or amount of charcoal to give based on the patient's weight (with special doses for children) and on how much poison was swallowed.

There are some doctors who will prescribe charcoal for emergency use in the home. This should only be done under the direct guidance of the doctor or poison control center. In the United States, the direct line to the poison control center is 1-800-222-1222. Thanks. I asked my husband to pick some up. He was at a CVS.

I have seen it on the shelves at Walgreens. After reading about it, I decided to keep some on hand. I wondered if it is something used for people that 'make' illegal drugs at their homes.

Activated charcoal does not induce vomiting --- it merely absorbs drugs and toxins and keeps them from being absorbed in the intestines --- there are no laws that it needs to be prescribed by a doctor -- some pharmacies may just feel more comfortable giving instructions for its use rather than giving free access to it on the shelves .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
