Will a Sally Beauty's hair dye with a high developer help lighten my hair?

Right now my hair is very typical medium-brown with gold highlights. I really want to try and take it lighter, so if I use a high-number developer (say 40) will it lighten the color? Or what shade exactly WILL it turn?

If everyone says it'll turn out awful, I won't do it. Please spare me the lecture on doing it myself, I'm a broke college student and don't have the money to go to a professional. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
