He is more of a social democrat, which is quite different. It makes him by far the most compatible with Christian ideology (very appealing for me) even if it is couched in secularism more appealing to atheists like yourself. As far as being screwed, I doubt that even someone like you in the wealthiest 10% will see much change, as Congress is certain to maintain the status quo, but for those of us in the middle and lower classes, Sanders represents something quite exciting.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
