It depends differently for all of us,your genes,your makeup,what your teeth are like,some people just have weak teeth,and regardless sadly of good hygiene although this should always be kept up,and oral care they will still get problems. Chewing gum is a good idea yes and will freshen the breath,of course the flossing and brushing is the upmost important thing to do,especially last thing before bed,of course if over periods of time you didn't get checkups,weren't flossing or brushing,or not doing it right with the right tools then yes you will or may get cavities but I am unable to tell you how soon or not this would happen. However yes cavities and root canal etc etc are important things to avoid,more emphasis must be put on the gums too,people often worry about the colour of there teeth,and looking after the teeth,but don't think of the gums there attached to.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
