All metal in the landfills can be recycled. The plastics probably can be recycled if not just burned for fuel. Much of the organic material like paper and food waste is being recycled in a fashion now as it breaks down and the methane gas is vented and burned for power today.

While I religiously check every piece of trash to separate the recycs, my state takes most of my work and just dumps it together at the land fill. I am told that we don't have the recycling facilities available in California and it was judged too expensive to transport our recycs to a state that does. Just so that I do my part, I still carefully identify every recyclable and I have very very little actual garbage - I put out one can every two to three weeks.
I compost in my yard. Is it worth it. Absolutely.
It's too everyone's benefit that we properly care for the planet. I do my part.
I apparently was not clear in my above statement. California has the recycling facilities to handle all those pieces of trash with recyc numbers on the bottom but most states do not and just dump those items in their landfills. Others transport recycs to California for processing.
We need recyc centers in most states.
The home system would grid up the plastic into pellets for mass storage to be dumped in recycle containers. Aluminum cans would be compressed into square cubes. The newspaper would be shredded and compressed into pellets.

Landfills may well be recycled in years to come, they might be dug up like quarries are today. http://www. Environmental-consultants.

To your question, landfills do not remove and segregate recyclable materials; they're about burying materials, all of it. Plastic will "biodegrade," but the nature of the plastic molecule is that it is in a string, and the decomposition only happens at the ends. The quick-degrade stuff merely has corn starch worked into the molecule to create more ends more quickly, but that's still slow.
The typical item of plastic can be 500 years at decomposing. Our North AND South Pacific have floating gyres of plastic trash cycling around their centers . .
And will for centuries to come. We could solve our problems, but we don' wanna.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
