Yes, every genuine gold will have a karat marking on it. 10 karat gold is the lowest karat that can be considered "pure" gold and is accepted at the "sell your gold" locations. Any karat below 10 will probably not be accepted.
A good way to check for gold plating would be to scratch it. I've also had many people show me that real gold leaves a mark when rubbed across foundation make up on your hand. I doubt that trick would help if it were a gold plated item though.
