Will the "Gulf Gusher" help BP replace Exxon in the modern lexicon as synonymous w/ "horrible oil spill disaster" & the antonym of "Green"?

While I'd have to disagree with the underlying assumption that Exxon has been synonymous with oil spill disaster certainly in the past couple of decades, I'd say it's fair to assume that BP's disaster at Deep Water Horizon will make it extremely tough for BP to flaunt it's attempted "green" facade for many years. The Exxon Valdez disaster is still a part of our modern day consciousness, but Exxon has long ago shed any automatic link of its corporate name to that disaster. Their funding of cleanup efforts, and the many decades that have since gone by have seen to that.

This just emphasizes, however, how tough a row to hoe BP has ahead of it, and the fact that it will not be able to do any of that hoeing until the spill is stopped. Indeed, the row just keeps on getting tougher and tougher as they struggle to stop the gush of crude into the Gulf. So far, the spill has reached about 40% of the amount spilled by the Valdez, and BP has thus far spent about $350 million in the effort to combat and stop the spill (see marketwatch.com/story/bp-spends-350-mill... ).

The good news for BP has been that they were able to close one of three sources of the leak, though the same amount that came from that one has simply been diverted to the two remaining sources. Also, their statements to the effect that they take responsibility for the costs of cleanup and containment, as well as their cooperation with the Coast Guard and other government agencies will stand them in good stead in the future, assuming they continue to live up to them.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
