I doubt it, because people have already made tablet computers and they've been out on the market for years - if anything, it's more of an overglorified netbook. I think that it will just sell alot because it is hyped up alot at the moment. Also, it's made by Apple, who is known to innovate and have their own distinctive style.
From what I see and hear, the Ipad is basically a more portable iMac designed like an Ipod. That being said, I am not doubting its quality. Personally, it'll go on my wishlist, because I'd like it in terms of practicality, and also because I know apple makes some pretty good stuff.
But, I do not think it will have a huge impact on our interaction with technology, if it doesn't help introduce more people to the tablet market, at least. Another contender that has been in the market for a while is Archos, and their different concept of a device with huge storage capabilities and infinite possibilities, has been an attractive one. In my opinion, their tablets are looking better than the apple one right now.
People have some very high expectations for this tablet, and so I think that if they cannot deliver anything, it may dissapoint some. In terms of being a game changer, I don't thinks so - not entirely. Like stated above, it may be hyped, but it ain't nothing URL1 may raise the bar for tablets, but not revolutionize them.
I think it has the potential to start a revolution. Though I'm also starting to think this revolution will start with an older generation. Let's look at the facts and features: -Great for reading "online" newspapers (Like our parents generation might enjoy) -Easy to use (unlike my parent's laptop that they constantly struggle with) -Doubles as a great photo album to sit on the desk (and watch slide shows of the grand kids) -On screen keyboard that fits nicely with the "hunt and peck" crowd.
-Plays games. OK maybe that one's not so high on the list for older folks... But in general, I think you will see the slow death of the net book. Maybe not with the first generation of the iPad, but perhaps with future generations (or one of the inevitable copycat products).
Though it will probably take a while, I see a day where all portable devices will look more like the iPad.
I think it is the first step. This device could eventually (maybe even in its current state) replace the computer for many consumers. Most people seem to forget that the vast majority of home users browse the web, use e-mail, listen to music/media, do homework, and play games.
This device can do it all. With the keyboard dock iWork seems like it would work great and the device obviously does all the other things in that list. Along with the low price, advanced tech and portability I don't see why this can't replace many consumers computers.
If apple added multi-tasking, a front facing camera etc. In version 2 I think it would then be revolutionary. The only reason I would need my computer then would be for recording music (needs lots of power) and programming.
I don't think it'll change much as far as how computers are used. But Apple is a game changer when it comes to technology and standards. They always come out with the slimmest most powerful technology.
This I-pad definiately raises the standards of size and longevity. I recently bought a netbook, an HP-mini. It barely has 3 hours of battery life.
This tablet may beat up the netbook industry, or it may be the last of the tablets. Imagine, going to a lovely cafe, sipping on a latte, taking a bite out of your scone, and then touching your tablet screen. Greasy.
Gaming could be fun, but how many guys have clean hands for this? And scratch paranoia! I-pod/touch accessories is a booming business.
Are they gonna sell protective cases for the i-pad? I'm sure they will, but that definitely takes away from the 1/2" thickness it advertises. Still, the technology it contains, like the Air, is impressive.
But I still think Apple is trying really hard to get rid of the cd/dvd media dependency in our world. Their motto: download everything from our i-tunes store. Who needs a hard-copy anymore?
If apple brings any change to the way the world works it would have to be with media. No more disks. Even blu-ray will be a thing of the past soon if Apple had it's way.
This looks to me like an expensive toy, sure I would love to play with it, but naturally I wouldn't have any reason to spend my money on such a device. I like my keyboard and mouse, I don't like the idea of looking straight down when I want to type something long and meaningful..not to mention no home row bumps, typing would be a lot of search and peck. I think what it will all come down to is the applications that get built for it, will there be convenient business apps?
I could see it becoming a glorified clipboard? But other then the type of people who carry around clipboards I can't see any heavy duty computer users needing an iPad other then browsing the web while on a bus? I actually can't think of any demographic other than Mac Fans that would purchase this device.
Maybe if you add a hotplate app students might be able to make use of it? Maybe if it had bouncy padding children could use it? Maybe if you could attach a keyboard and mouse and place it on a stand you could use it as a normal computer?
Anyway, I'm not sold, I was never really sold, and I'm not cynical towards Mac - I thought the iPod and iPhone were revolutionary products the moment I saw them. But the iPad... I don't see it or understand the hype.
I think that the iPad contains everything and more that it needs to revolutionize computing.
It definitely is an interesting thing and for the first generation seems more like a novelty. What it is happens to a smaller netbook that's almost all screen. Sure, it looks cool but that's what it is, a touchscreen netbook.
Which leads into another problem, since it's a netbook that on average costs, at minimum, $200 more than the average netbook. It's still got to prove itself once it's released.
I am acturely a little disapointed in this first iPad, I was expecting a device that could replace my laptop. But I must say that I doubt that it is going to happen with the iPad 1.0. I stil have hopes tho, that the next iPad will be able to do the trick, just go ahead and release it in a jiffy Apple!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
