I work for a computer company doing customer service but I've noticed that this year especially our sales have dramatically dropped. We assemble computers based on custom orders (via eBay and our website), and order the parts from California. Right now, its nearly impossible to beat out prices for Dell and HP as far as imitating specs are concerned.
While our parts that we put in systems are high quality (Asus, Gigabyte, etc. ), with preloaded Windows XP or Vista we simply cannot beat the prices of giant competetors. It is extremely hard to get a discount on Windows OEM and make a profit off it.
The US isn't strong in computer manufacturing now. Very few of the computers are actually built here. Those are are "built" here are really just assembled from parts made in Asia (especially China, South Korea, and Taiwan.) The US is still the world leader in writing software, and Apple Computer in particular still leads the world in industrial design.
But the actual physical manufacturing is mostly done elsewhere.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
