I would not freeze the reports or put a fraud alert. Employers or future creditors/landlords will not be able to look at your report And the fraud alert is extremely hard to remove - I gone through this (a nightmare - they must have cavemen workign at these places) ID theft where someone steals your Identity to open credit is extremely rare In over 98% of the cases is is done by a close family member, such as a parent. Why?
They have to use the address that is on the reports. The parents get the mail, so the child never knows his Identity has been stolen. These commercials (like Montel) have people scared to death Freezes or fraud alerts can never prevent anyone from using your current open accounts.
They can't prevent medical ID theft also. Just check those reports once a year, and if you ever see anything innacurate, just dispute it, and it will be removed. Read that part again about ID theft being 98% done by family members ( and this is just the ones that get reported - some kids will not report their parents) Yes, they have your information.
But would anyone risk going to jail for this? No It is easy to track when someone opens credit in your name. The bill has to go somewhere, and it has to match the address on your reports.
Credit freeze and an alert are two different things. An alert will be shared with all three credit bureaus and there is no charge. It expires in 90 days.It is also pretty worthless.
The alert tells creditors to call you to verify that you actually applied for the credit. Unfortunately, most creditors just ignore that which defeats the whole purpose of the alert. A freeze has to be done at each credit bureau and there is a one time fee every time you freeze and unfreeze.
No one, not even you, will be able to get a new account unless the credit is unfrozen. Landlords will not be able to check your credit unless you unfreeze the specific credit report.Do the thieves have your actual license or just the number? If it's just the number, there really isn't much they can do with that and you really don't need to worry about ID theft.
If they actually have your license, there could be enough info to be concerned -- name, address, date of birth, SS# ....
The FTC works to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
