Would the PlayStation 3 be a better choice than a Wii as a birthday present for a boy that is about to turn 13?

The Wii is a good system for younger kids, but also for groups, and is more of a kind of party entertainment system especially for casual and non-gamers. If he asking for a gaming system then it is likely he is more interested in a more "hard core gamer" oriented system. So the choice really comes down to an xbox 360 or a playstation 3.

And from what you have said I might be more inclined to recommend the xbox 360. It is cheaper (also comes in different price teirs), and currently has a much larger range of games available for it. Yes, the Playstation 3 is a much better choice for a 13 year old boy. (I say that as a mother who has tons of teenage boys visiting my son to play video games). Thirteen year old boys find the Wii "boring" after the first two weeks.

Yes, the wii is fun but don't get me wrong after a while you will get bored of it.. the ps3 is the best game system and you don't have to pay for playing games online.
