Falls over laughing to begin with* In all seriousness EVERYONE has a right to self expression. If you have the right to set up a Jesus nativity scene in your yard this person has the right to set up a Santa Jesus shoot out. You can't pick and choose who gets freedom simply because you find it offensive or you don't have freedom you have acceptance of popular opinion.
If the scene was Jesus shooting Satan and not Santa I doubt a fuss would be being raised. Not only would I not start a petition to have it removed, but if I knew one was being started I'd start one to keep it.
I am a firm believer in the freedom of expression. From the video, it didn't look like it was displayed right up against the sidewalk. It is usually art that falls under the gun for being too revealing, harsh or nasty. As an artist myself I would feel hypocritical signing that petition.
If I had a kid and lived in that neighborhood, I would use this as an opportunity to teach him/her about how our great country works. I just hope this guy doesn't take the Easter bunny and nail him to the cross this coming spring. I'm not sure how I would explain that one to my imaginary kid!
No. I think it's a mean thing to do to all the kids in the area, but parents need to explain to their kids eventually that not all adults make good choices, and not all adults do things that need to be respected. I would tell my child that the display does not mean the real Santa is in any danger, and that that adult was making a bad joke.
Then I would just try to ignore it.
I guess the actual question asks if I would sign the petition if it was my neighbor. Technically, the answer is yes. I can see the humor in it, but I would not like to see something that is both offensive and poorly constructed in my neighborhood.
I also love the commercialism of Christmas. That being said, my neighborhood is quite a bit different than the one shown in the video. In my area it sure wouldn't fly, but a rural location might just be the place for something like this.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
