I would have a problem even though it's a private business. Imagine, there were donations in your city to have a very good private white's only private school, but none for other races. Imagine a small town in which the only theater is privately owned and only allows christians, but not other faiths to enter.
Imagine the only domestic violence shelter within 200 miles is private and is only for hispanics, not other races. What if the only hospital in your town is private, funded by donation and just for men, denying women entrance? Would that be okay?
This is precisely why the civil rights acts denied many types of discrimination in accommodation even for private businesses. If they serve the public they should not be allowed to discriminate against entire segments of the population. (Sadly, the Civil rights act, addressed race, gender and religion in the accommodation clause, but not gender, which is the problem) I don't believe services offered to the public should discriminate.
It's horrible how the present domestic violence shelter system discriminates against men, but I am very opposed to the idea of fighting discrimination with more discrimination. Two wrongs don't make a right. We don't need to add discrimination against women, we need to get rid of the discrimination against men that exists in the present system.
While I'm overall against discriminatory policies, I do think there can be a place for segregated but equal accommodations like we see with restrooms, locker rooms and sports. Segregated shelters could be a part of the overall shelters system so long as it equally accommodates both male and female victims, but the second you segregate, you have the potential for inequality. This is precisely what drove the Brown vs. school board landmark decision.
Add: Very good, question based on very complex issues.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
