It is great! It is easy and convenient. The car are fairly new and they always have some sort of add on package, ie better radio, controls, etc, not like most rental companies (cough cough...).
The insurance is included and gas is free, EzPass is in every car, but they are some caveats. People with pets suck. They don't keep their dog or whatever in the cage and hair gets everywhere.
People who go to the beach, don't vacuum or sometimes even brush out the car afterward. Things happen, spilled drink, etc. Just clean it up. We are sharing right?
I use the monthly program and use a car maybe 2-3 time a month. I do a big shopping mostly for a few hours. It servers its purpose. When I go to visit my sister in Baltimore is costs a bit more.
Only 150 miles are included for each day. This is great, but if you are traveling further you pay for it. It definitely beats the convenience of a car rental, but if you are using it for multiple days instead of hours, it adds up fast compared to Dollar or one of the other cheepie rental places.
If Zip car could do a one way system it would be my dream, but the only way that would happen is if Hertz bought them out. I have been using Zip Car for almost 4 years now. It has been wonderful.
As more people use the cars, they become more worn faster, but it is to be expected as the usage grows. They cannot add enough lots in Manhattan for the weekends, during the week it is much easier to get a car.
I've used Zip cars several times. Good for when you need a car for a few hours; after that, cheaper to rent, if you can get a rental for $30-40/day (versus about $70/day for Zip, which does include gas and insurance). For a couple hours or half a day, the convenience of instant check in/out beats a rental.
Especially valuable if you are within walking distance of a Zip car lot. Otherwise you need to figure out how to get to the car in the first place--cab, public transit often negate the Zip convenience and/or cost savings. Conclusions: Great for the above scenarios.
Our family has had one car instead of two, and Zip cars are one factor that allowed us to do that. There are calculators on their website that you can use to figure out whether it would be more affordable for you to use a Zip car versus own a car. That said, I think it is most important to consider your specific usage requirements, and proximity to a Zip car lot.
I'm a Zipcar member in NYC for over five years. It really breaks down to how much you travel and need a car. NYC is a pain to own a car in now.
If you buy a car the wrong way, adding a car note, parking, gas, and insurance. You are better off with Zipcar, you cant beat it. There was some explosion of car buying some years back and you will have to add your time in hunting for parking if you put your ride in the street and moving it for cleaning.
I live in forest hills and parking is a battle royal but with four Zipcar location in walking distance its a blessing. Listen I know people are like leasing will be cheaper but that's not my cup of tea and the real way to find a better deal is to buy your ride outright, most of us cant do that right now. Zipcar is exploding in NYC and summer road trips have been awesome.
One note, Zipcar give you 180 free per 24 hours after that they change you a small amount for every mile and you can only rent a car consecutively over 4 days (cant go on a straight five day road trip. The car will have to be returned at the end of the 4th day). As for how clean the car is, its a sharing system.
People in your area take care of the cars it stay's clean. People leave a mess, report it in and if you clean the car, Zipcar will reimburse you. Another bonus feature, fly or take a train to a city that has Zipcar and use the cars there!
One last thing, you might think to yourself oh hey great, let me get a Zipcar and go on a 500 mile trip... Um I wouldn't do that, it would cost more than just renting a rental car for some company. In short, you live in a city, better to Zipcar than own. (Bring your own GPS thou).
Great concept. Customer service tends be lousy at best. Always reserve the car for an hour more than you think you'll need it.
Don't be surprised if the location of pick up is not where ZipCar claims. The pros and cons are almost immediately apparent.
Do a search on Consumerist... Make sure you DO NOT get a Mazda 3 "Mccory". Electrical problems! The worst part is they keep renting the same car!
I live in Manhattan and with how often I leave the city it simply does not make sense to own a car. I used a zip car when I moved here (small Toyota pickup truck), again when picking up furniture from IKEA, and a few other times to go shopping, pick up a friend from the airport, etc. I love ZipCar. Ghly recommended for anyone without their own car.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
