Your older cat may have bad teeth A few years back, we had a neutered male cat named Skippy. He was ancient...and lived to be 26. As he got older, his teeth started to get really yellow...then started to fall out.

Skippy had breath strong enough to slay a dragon...LOL With two or more cats in the same house...one has to be the dominant cat. The stronger, healthier one will become #1. I imagine that, in the past, the older cat was the boss....probably just tollerating the younger one.

Once the older cat gets weak or sick (as with an abcessed tooth), the younger one will push to be the dominant cat. The older cat is probably trying to keep his 'place in the pack' and the young one is fighting to be #1. I would suggest having the Vet check the older cats teeth. An abcess can be very painful.

As with people bad breath happens with stress I noticed this in my older cat too when we adopted an new kitten. Mars Temtations "Dentabites" not only helps with bad breath, but with cleaining cats teeth. The girls get two treats in the morning when I wake up and two before bed.

Also there is a spray that you can use the ease your cats nerves called "At Ease" made by Natur Vet. What this is, is a calming spray and all natural. I spray this around my home, in the car, cat carriers etc.WOW does this stuff work...(wish that had this in human formula) It calmed my older cat down very nicely and will play with the little one with less GRRRRR and HISSSS.

It puts nervouse or stressed cats at ease. It doesn't have any scent to it so ok to spray on friends that might come to the home.It is a simulated feline pheromones to create a sense of comforting residual air. Sources: Live with my girls .

If not, I am totally appalled. I can't believe you could let this go on for five years! Bad breath like you describe comes from either very bad teeth or inflammation of the gums, not to mention many other possible causes that are a lot more serious (not that the tooth problems are not serious enough).

It can even be kidney disease or feline leukemia! How could you possibly only be concerned about why the young healthy cat is beating up the older SICK cat? It sounds as though you know the cat is sick, and you need to find out the cause and get the cat treated.

If you cannot take responsible care of the cat, you need to take it to a no-kill shelter that may be able to get some help for it, if it is not too late. Moving to a new location can change the rank of your cats. The alpha cat, and I imagine it was the older cat, can be replaced by the younger cat due to changes in environment.

Or the young cat simply had a personality change after the location. It may simply feel more free to express itself in undesirable ways. You need to separate the cats if this is really a problem that the cats cannot work out.

My friend has 4 cats and 3 of them get along. One antagonizes the others and is kept in her bedroom with her own litter box. Unfortunately these things are sometimes necessary for the safely of the other cat.

I am sorry to be so harsh, but I am very concerned about the health and welfare of your pet. I sincerely hope that you will get help for this poor helpless kitty! Although a cat's breath under normal circumstances is not the sweetest smell in the world you will certainly notice when it becomes foul smelling.

Bad breath is usually an indicator that something is not right with your cat's health. Possible Reasons for Bad Breath in Cats Abscessed tooth. 1 Please get your older cat to a vet as soon as you can! The most likely reason for truly bad breath in a cat is infection, in the gums or teeth, or even the throat. Even if she doesn't show it, your cat could be in a lot of pain!

If you haven't had either one to a vet for a while, it would be good to have both of the cats in for a vet exam, and to update their vaccinations. A vet exam can often catch problems while they are small and easy to correct or treat. But at the very least, get the older cat seen; she can't get herself to a doctor to cure whatever is causing the bad breathe, and must rely on you to do it for her!

As to the dominance issue, any time you change the environment for cats, there is likely to be a shift in the power hierarchy. I expect that the move has more to do with the younger cat gaining dominance than the older cat's breath. However, if the bad breath is caused by illness that has made your older cat weaker or sick, she may not be able (or interested) in sparring with the younger cat.

Please come back to this DB, and let us know how your older kitty is doing once she has been seen by the vet. If you need tips on how to give her pills or liquid meds, we can help you with that! :)What are your cats' names?

2 Katherine is right; can't add anything to that. But do come back and let us know what you learned. There are a lot of divergent opinions on this DB, but one thing is for sure, the people here feel strongly about the health and welfare of their pets.

And when the health issue is addressed don't be surprised if the balance of power shifts again as Older Kitty starts feeling better.
