Toys to spark his intellect I can’t be completely thorough, because I’m in college right now, pursuing a degree in special education, but maybe I can be of some help. Get him toys that will really work his mind. Children in the autism spectrum and are high functioning often need something to keep him/her focused.
If he has socialization problems, there isn’t much that can be done in preschool with toys (it’s a very "Me! Mine! " age in general), but getting him something that’s relatively portable that he may be able to bring to school may be of benefit.
When you say "active toys", you didn’t specify whether you mean large, outdoor play-type of toys or just toys that will interest him. So, in an effort to make it more for portability, I’m going to recommend some smaller toys. This will not only be able to help him calm down if he starts to have a meltdown, but he may be able to bring it to restaurants or religious services if he fidgets a lot when not kept occupied.
Having worked at a major theme park, I've seen children with various special needs use handheld gaming systems to keep them occupied in lines or when they're just bored and waiting for a show to start. Something analytical My understanding of aspergers, through a friend's brother, is that they usually develop extraordinary mathematical skills, while more literary skills and devices such as allusions, metaphors, etc. Tend to be beyond their grasp. My friend's brother ended up with engineering certificates at the age of 16. If my understanding is correct, then unfortunately getting a gift to try to spurn social skills would be of little use.
Instead, I would give him something that will captivate him mathematically, scientifically, or analytically.
