5th grade math question that just stumped a 10th grader?

John is 16 let john be x 20 (sam) = 1/2x + 12 8 = 1/2 x 16 = x Sam is 20 if John is 16 then half of johns age is 8 and 8 + 12 is 20 sam's age.

YO JUST USE SOME RIDDLES BRO 20 x 2 = 40 + 12 = 52 I think the confusing part is (+ 12 yrs) and they already provided sam's age making it more confusing, but im a 7th grader what do I know.

John is 16... you could simply work backwards...subtract 12 then double it.. OR algebraicly it would be y=2(20-12).

S = (1/2)J + 12 = 20 (1/2)J = 8 J = 8*2 = 16.

20 = (j/2) + 12 20 - 12 = j/2 8 = j/2 j = 2 * 8 j = 16.

Sam is 20. John is half his age (10) plus 12 years (22).

Lol john= x/2+12 and sam=x=20 so half 20 plus 12 so he's 22.
