99 Dodge Durango mysteriously stalling! Just bought a used 99 Dodge Durango, V8 Magnum, 4x4, 128,000 miles... and it keeps stalling! Long drive, short drive, hot, cold... doesn't matter!
We have changed the throttle sensor and the air idle control valve and are avoiding 1000 other "fixes" only to find out we bought a piece of ****. Had 1 interesting stall, we went over to the computer compartments under the hood (a common problem with no sure solution mentioned online) and when I grabbed the center compartment to assure connection, all of these sensors/relays just popped... clack, clack, clack. Sure enough started up with no problem after that.
Does anyone have a legitimate fix for whatever the problem may be that not only worked, but stayed working? Too many people never come back to blogs to update on whether or not their fix was permanent. Love the vehicle, would rather not get rid of it, someone please help me save it!

Sounds like... Sounds like you have a loose or corroded connection. Check everything near the "center compartment". You may have a loose or corroded connector pin.
Unplug each cable and peek at the pins, looking for dirt or corrosion. Plug them back in real firmly until the latches go "ping". Or "click".
Or "snap". Also check the fuse box. Remove the fuses one at a time, check the pins for corrosion, admire the color of the plastic, etc... Often just pulling and reinserting a fuse will clean the contacts to fix a problem.
Also check with the dealer to make sure all the safety recalls have been done. Some of these had ball joints that would go snap-crackle-pop and you'd all of a sudden be driving a 3-wheeled vehicle. Also sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but these engines are well known for getting all gunked up with oil sludge and dying.
Dodge firmly resisted paying a cent for this design problem-- always blaming the owners for the sludge. Even if you had meticulous oil-change records. You might consider doing some anti-sludge treatments just to feel better.
There's some $6 cans of "engine cleaner" (basically 15 cents of Kerosene), which you can run put in the oil and idle the engine for 5 minutes just before an oil change.
1 Good Luck. Had a POS 99 Durango, at 40,000 transmission went. 2 weeks after I got it back the dealer said the tie rods were shot, and NOT under warrenty.
Gave them 3 hours to give me a price break since they had done all the oil changes etc, and the problem with the transmission. Nothing, traded it in on a Ford and have been a Ford driver since. Had the Durango 3 years.
Loved it when it ran! .
