A group of bees has suddenly decided to hang out on my hummingbird feeder. How do I get rid of bees but not birds? I have a hummingbird feeded that is a daily stop for hummers migrating south.

During the past few weeks, it has been discovered by bees, and they try to keep the hummers from getting to the feeder to fuel up. I want to get rid of the bees, but can't do anything that would also be harmful to the hummers. Try moving the feeder, even just a few feet; insects are not very smart, and will assume the food source is gone forever the Hummingbird Society has excellent advice:hummingbirdsociety.org/hottopics/feederp... people have found other solutions:garden.org/boards/index.php?q=view&id=14... more:birding.about.com/od/attracthummers/ht/b... that leaky, dripping hummingbird feeders attract many more bees and ants than those that are properly maintained. Furthermore, old, fermented sugar water is more likely to attract insects than hummingbirds, so be sure to change the mix at least twice a week in warm weather if the hummingbirds don't drain it. We weren't able too. We had the same problem this year and we just finally let it go. The bees are having a hard time this year and are getting what they can when they can.

I googled the subject a few monthes ago and apparently this is quite common in Texas. The reports I read indicated that the two species would work it out, but that there were a few things that could be done to move the bees away. When you fill the feeder make sure that you wipe it down really well before taking it back outside.

Next fill a seperate container of some sort (we used a pot base with some rocks in it and fill it with of all things red mountain dew). If you are in a really dry area do a seperate container with water. It actually worked.

We have stopped feeding the hummingbirds right now so that they start their migration, thus the bees are gone now. We also had a huge influx of yellow jackets at the same time. I am highly allergic to both, but the bees are very passive. It was the yellow jackets that attacked (and yes they do really attack) me.

How to tell the difference between the two is easy. Yellow Jackets are a shiny yellow and black, quite vibrant. The bees are of course fuzzy and their yellow is more on the dirty looking side.

Hope this helps. Good Luck..

Get rid of bees at your hummingbird feeder Try handing a bag of mothballs hear the hummingbird feeder - it shouldn't scare away the birds, but it will drive off the bees. Another thing they don't like is vinegar - you can try putting it on the part of the feeder that the birds don't touch. If you know where the nest is, spray it with any insect killing poison while they are sleeping.

You could also hang a bug zapper in front of the entrance and leave it on - most will die and the rest will leave. Sources: wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_get_rid_of... .

I don't know the migratory patterns of hummingbirds or where you live, but I wonder if the bees will be gone sooner when the weather gets colder.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
