When I bid a job, I require 1/3 down when the customer returns the signed contract. The contract specifies the next draw, if applicable, and the balance is due upon satisfactory completion of the job. This protects both me and the customer.
I submit a lien waiver when the last payment is received, so make sure you get one from your handyman. This prevents him or one of his suppliers from placing a lien on your home for unpaid bills. The 1/3 I get up front pays for materials for the job, up through the point of the draw.

NEVER pay in advance unless it is someone you have worked with before and you trust COMPLETELY. You might have to pay 'materials' fee --just enough to buy a starter supply of materials. A good handyman will give you a breakdown of your fee -- how much is labor, how much is materials, etc. Then pay the rest when you are satisfied with the completed job.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
