We all have faith in something. The faith starts where the evidence ends.
Your assessment above makes it sound like the existence of Gods is a 50/50 proposition when there is enough evidence to dismiss Gods as highly unlikely to exist. It would be like giving any other magical creature 50/50 odds of existence when we know that the odds are slim to none. First we live in a natural universe that has limits that can not be broken because of natural law.
The only way to break these limits is through magic and magic is a concept that can ONLY be imagined. That is how we invented all our other imaginary, magical creatures. Gods contradict nature and when believers claim "all powerful" that is pretty much code for "magical".
Nonexistence leaves no evidence and like you said, we have no evidence. We also have plenty of evidence that people like storytelling. Combine all of this and the odds of Gods being man made myths is close to certainty.
We know enough about our universe to know an intelligence is NOT involved. If it were, we would be debating between advanced aliens or Gods. You are also correct that we know enough to dismiss all religions as purely man made regardless of whether any unknown Gods actually exist.
Finally, with no evidence at all why do people "want" to believe some kind of God or Gods exists? I suspect it's for selfish reasons, meaning these God believers want something that only these supposed Gods can give them.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
