There is a lot of bad ABA out there. Poorly trained aides doing the programs. Just drilling the discrete trials and not putting knowledge into practical use.
Some skills are questionable..many people don't make eye contact...it should be good enough to look toward people. I personally find making eye contact distracting and I don't have autism..... Children without disabilities don't get a choice to learn or not...why should children with autism be given the choice of just doing their own thing or learning. Good ABA incorporates natural environment teaching and incidental learning, not just drilling rote skills AS I SAID< WE DON"T ASK TYPICAL KIDS IF THEY WANT TO LEARN TO READ AND DO MATH AND TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES...WE FORCE THEM TO LEARN TOO.
Good ABA can teach people language skills-understanding what people say and being able to talk (or use sign or pictures to communicate) it can teach self help skills like dressing, preparing food, toothbrushing, handwashing....these things aren't abuse..in fact it would abuse to not teach these things.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
