Sounds a lot like you have encountered a species of fire ant...? Fire ants can appear to be brown and are very small and there is a slight possibility that they are in South Carolina if that is where you were when you got bit/stung. The sting that I got from just one fire ant burned for days and it swelled with a little red welt, then it started a burning feeling that felt better when I scratched it like an itch. Vinegar helped with my symptoms at the site; although, my body just had to fix the reaction over time.

Sounds like it could be an allergy Ice it down and apply hydrocortisone ointment. You can also take OTC Benadryl for itching. If it lasts more than a day or your breathing is affected in any way see your doctor immediately!
