Anyone know how to clean out kids bath toys?

My son has a ton of those water squirting balls, some sea creature bead that that attach to one another but as time goes by they fill with that black lining of whatever the heck it is. Does anyone know a way to prevent this, or maybe a good solution to cleaning it perhaps? Asked by JackLeen 49 months ago Similar questions: clean kids bath toys Family > Parenting.

Soaking - not in a dishwasher... NOT in the dishwasher.... unless you want melted goo...(see: highmaintenancemom.com/drupal/node/324) Some recommend a 1/10 dilution of bleach and water. Soak the toys for 20+ minutes. After soaking, rinse them completely.

This should be effective at killing 99.99% of common bacteria and viruses. Prions are a hotly debated topic and it is not clear that they can be destroyed even in an autoclave, however if you worry about prions then you are extremely germophobic. The second part is that you cannot judge the melting temperature of plastic or rubber substances by how hard or soft they are.

Certain plastics are designed to be soft, but stand up to significant tempertures without melting. Other plastics are hard, but melt at low temperatures. It's the type of plastic or rubber that determines it's melting point.Also... There is a new product, Lysol R, that is bleach-free, fragrance-free, and color-free.It is designed as a safe food-surface cleaner that kills 99.9% of bacteria without rinsing, in one minute.

It can be used safely on toys, changing tables, etc. From medicalnewstoday.Com: "LYSOL(R) Food Surface Sanitizer is a new product specially formulated for use on food contact surfaces with no rinsing required. The new formula is safe when used as directed on surfaces to reduce cross-contamination of bacteria, such as E. Coli and Salmonella.

Prevention helps a teeny bit, but cleaning is usually the better route To prevent the black stuff from forming, make sure that you always squirt all of the water out after each bath, and then lay the toys out to dry on a towel, counter, or just leave them in the bath tub, and do not put them away until they are completely dry. To clean them, use a solution of full strength vinegar four parts to one part water, squeeze the solution in the toys, and then make sure to squeeze all of the solution out. You can use hydrogen peroxide or bleach instead of the vinegar, but they tend to discolor the toys..

Yuck I would just throw them away, and get more or better yet something else entirely. I suppose you could try bleach, but chances are you won't be able to get all the black mildew out. Try to stick with toys that don't fill with water, then you can just pop them in the dishwasher periodically.

A bleach solution will prevent the issue The black stuff you described is mold/mildew. If the toys are really icky or slimy, your best bet is to just toss and start over. The best prevention for black sludge inside tub toys is to squeeze the toys as dry as possible and drain them hole side down after every use.

Then, once a week or so, you could fill up your kitchen sink with hot water and a half a cup of liquid bleach. You might want to wear gloves for this: *Be sure that each toy is submerged and some of the bleach solution makes it inside each of the toys *Squeeze and squirt until no more discolored water appears *Rinse thoroughly *Squeeze out all excess water. Rinse again for extra measure.

*Allow to dry for a day or two before use If you don't like to use bleach, you could use a white vinegar solution instead. :) mrscleannw.com/tips/vinegar-cleaning.html If the toys aren’t squirt toys (the kind where you squeeze to pull water in and squeeze to squirt it out), you could use the dishwasher to sanitize. Just be sure to use the top rack and no heat.

Additionally, soft tub toys are porous and bathrooms are notoriously germy. It’s a good idea to replace soft tub toys every 3 months or so no matter what condition they are in. Marymoomoo's Recommendations Sink Reflections: Overwhelmed?

It is mildew, black mold. You can use a mild solution of bleach and water. I know of no way to prevent it, frankly.

Other than putting the toys in bright sunlight after you've gotten them as dry as possible after every use. Sources: my kid's toys .
