I had a shutdown problem so I did a reset to an earlier date but had to msconfig from the start box to get the computer to do a system restore and accept an earlier reset point. In the System Configuration Utility, I did a selective start with unchecking 'load system services'. The reset worked and the shut down problem disappeared -- but now I cannot access my help and support service (without which I am sunk) or my Internet service.
If I try to rerun the System Configuration Utility with a 'normal start', it doesn't seem to have any effect. I'm using Windows "home'" XP Asked by Thannisan 44 months ago Similar questions: help computer problem shutdown reset earlier Computers > Hardware > Desktops & Laptops.

When you do a system restore, you don’t actually delete anything. Your registry and some of your settings go back to an earlier time, and updated versions of some programs go back to earlier states, but everything is still there. The trick is finding them and reattaching them.
You should be able to find your help and support center by searching for the file helpctr.exe. On my systems, it’s in the folder C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\binaries. There is also a protected copy of it in the hidden folder c:\windows\system32\dllcache, where lots of other protected copies of things reside.
If it’s missing from its usual location, the version from dllcache can be copied into it. There is also a file called helpsvc. Exe that runs as a service which should start with Windows, and one called HelpHost.exe.
All of those have protected copies in dllcache and they should all be restored to the usual location. Help and Support should show up in the services tab under msconfig. Is the checkbox to "de all Microsoft services" cleared? If it isn't, clear it to make the Microsoft services visible.
Is Help and Support there? Now, I don’t know what you mean by your Internet service. Do you normally connect to the Internet through a broadband connection, or do you use dial-up?
You may have to run the setup wizards for Internet access again. Sources: Experience .

2 Ichtheosaurus: thanks so much for your help. I connect to broadband via a DSL Modem. The other computers have no connection problem, just the one in question.
I will put your advice to work in the morning.

3 If you made or were provided an XP recovery disk by your vendor, you may have to resort to that. I'm not sure what went wrong with the restore; they usually work pretty well. The dllcache folder I told you about contains protected copies of critical system files, but the problem is knowing where to put them.
Let us know how it works out for you.
