With the showdown between Bush and Democratic majority congress, it's been predicted that Bush will veto anything with a time table for troops withdrawal. It's hard to see how we can get out of this predicament without a loose-loose ending. Asked by AgedWisdom 57 months ago Similar questions: guess troops back Iraq Politics & Law > Politics.
I was in at the end of the last bad war- because people here don't want us to win That's how it was when I was in the service in 75 - I got called a baby killer and had my face spat in and the president was wronf to try and win or try and safe the country we had went in to save. And in that case, we had lost more than 10 times the number of troops we have in this war. But what's going to happen is that whether it happens in the next 20 months or just afterward, our troops are coming home and the Muslim extremists will interpret that as us losing and as our weakness.
And another muslim autocracy will take over the Iraq area. I see us losing most of Europe to a violent muslim invasion over the next 30 years. They are having a time of what Christians might call evagelism or "revival" and instead of talking to others or going door to door, Islam is usually spread by political takeover.
I doubt that President Bush will allow us to leave there unless Iraq's elected government asks us to leave, so that will end up being whatever the next president want to do. It's sad. We could win, we could make them a successful country and allies.
But we no longer want to sacrifice, we no longer think our way of life is the best. We're no longer a great country, I don't think. Well, at least we don't think we are.

1 awarulz, regarding your answer "I was in at the end of the last bad war- because people here don't want us to win":Thanks for your response. It's really hard to get to the real story. I don't even really know if average Iraqi citizens welcome us or hate us.In the end, it's not what the Iraqi government think of us as friends or ally that's important, it's how their average citizens think of us, isn't it?
We have to find a way to win the heart of their people, not just winning a war. I totally agree that setting a date for withdrawal is not really a good idea, but now we got our foot in the door and we simply can't pull out without losing bigger stakes. Meanwhile, now I have kids of my own, I can't help but think of all the men/women on both sides dying everyday and wonder if this will all be worth it someday.

2 I think it's a difficult thing. My buddies and I hated Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford even more for pulling us out of the Nam. In retrospect, it was probably the right thing to do, but maybe not.
You know, we still have troops in Korea 50+ years after the Korean War, in Okinawa and in Genrmany 60+ years after WWII and our troops have been in and around the Philipines since the Spanish American War. But, we don't want to win wars anymore. We want to hope we can sit around and sing Kum-Bye-Yah.My youngest is 17 and I am NOT encouraging him to join the military, even though it's kind of a tradition in our family.
The leadership sucks.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
