The most likely scenario in Sanford, Florida, Feb. 26: A white, 250 pound, neighborhood watch volunteer armed with a pistol saw a black, 140 pound, unfamiliar boy carrying a bag with unknown contents that turned out to be Skittles and tea. The kid was wearing a hoodie and was walking and talking on a cell phone. The watcher called 911, and gave a description.
Ignoring the dispatcher's advice, he followed the boy. As reported by the other party on the cell-phone, the boy saw his follower and started to walk away faster. The big guy ran and caught up with the little guy and asked him to explain his presence.
At some point, a scuffle began. There was screaming and a shot. The boy died and the Mayberry cops came.
Barney Fife saw blood on the big guy and heard his self-defense story. Up to this point, the facts are clear. In what followed, all the facts are not clear.
Is the shooter a racist? We don't have the evidence. Was he in trouble with a dead kid on the ground and a smoking gun in his hand?
Yes! Was self-defense his only possible alibi? Yes!
Did he shoot because he was afraid of serious injury? Given the shooter's obvious weight advantage, Barney Fife must have had some doubt. Did Barney Fife pick up the cell phone and call the other party?
No. Did he immediately take the names of all the witnesses or will they come out of the woodwork in dribs and drabs as needed. We don’t know.
Did Barney Fife take the bloody shooter to an emergency room for treatment and a police report? No. Whose blood was on the shooter?
We don’t know. When the shooter finally appears with wounds, how will we know when and where he got them? If he appears with no apparent injuries, were they completely healed during the month or so of seclusion?
We can't know. Who is guilty of assault? The big guy is guilty without question.
He came into the private space of the kid, where he had no right to be. Was he charged with assault? No.
Barney Fife decided that the shot was fired in self-defense. Was that a racist decision? If a 140 pound white kid was dead on the ground and a 250 pound black guy with a smoking gun in his hand claimed self-defense, would Barney Fife make an arrest?
You betcha! Attitudes change over time. The KKK is not what it used to be.
But evolution is a slow process. Too damn slow!
Say... Leave the media alone... The people who shovel fish guts over the side of the boat to attract sharks are guilty of nothing more than feeding the sharks. On the other hand -- the sharks bite.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
