Are satellite phones more reliable than cell phones?

It's more a matter of what you need. I don't know if a satellite phone is necessarily more "reliable" if you mean call quality or some dropped calls. But a satellite phone will work pretty much anywhere in the world, the middle of New York City or the middle of the Gobi desert.

Cell phones only work in areas where there is cellular service. The call quality of satellite phones can less than optimal, but if you are going to the Gobi desert or other extremely remote area, a satellite phone is your only option. And the service is extremely expensive..
