Are social networking sites benefical or overrated? Why or why not?

Social networking sites are big for business because now they can reach a larger and more targeted audience then they could with print media or television commercials, also social media can be tracked, so now you can see who is actually reading and clicking on your ads. Society as a whole is using social networking sites to meet like minded individuals who have the same interests that they do, so if you have a hobby such as coin collecting now you can join a group of other coin collectors and share tips, stories and build a relationship with them that could last a lifetime. This type of connection that happens on a global scale is something that people are drawn to.

Also the cost of doing business by means of social media is next to nothing and the return on influence is much greater.

I think social networking sites are extremely beneficial. For example, last year one of my best friends died. He was temporarily in Tennessee with family who did not know me.

I happened to have my friend's cousin on my Facebook friends' list, and saw the announcement on my wall early one morning. I would have not found out had it not been for Facebook.
