Are the new compact fluorescent light globes safe? What evidence is there?

I found a research article about this . Hope the details would be of help to you. -----------quote----------- New research by the Health Protection Agency has shown that some energy saving compact fluorescent lights can emit ultraviolet radiation at levels that, under certain conditions of use, can result in exposures higher than guideline levels.

Given its research findings, the Agency is recommending some precautionary measures for the use of certain types of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). The Agency's view is that open (single envelope) CFLs shown in Fig. 1 should not be used where people are in close proximity - closer than 30 cm or 1 ft - to the bare light bulb for over 1 hour a day.

The Agency advises that for such situations open CFLs should be replaced by the encapsulated (double envelope) type shown in Fig. 2. Alternatively, the lamp should be moved so that it is at least 30 cm or 1 ft .

The Agency's Chief Executive Justin McCracken said, "This is precautionary advice and people should not be thinking of removing these energy saving light bulbs from their homes. We are advising people to avoid using the open light bulbs for prolonged close work until the problem is sorted out and to use encapsulated bulbs instead. In other situations where people are not likely to be very close to the bulbs for any length of time, all types of compact fluorescent light bulbs are safe to use." -----------end quote.

This question might be addressed at the mercury level in CF bulbs. I want to answer that because people bring this up even though it is not an issue. Fossil fuel electric plants, especially coal spew mercury into the air as part of the combustion processes.

Because CF bulbs are much more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs the mercury in the CF bulb is less than that emitted by burning fossil fuels to power the old style bulb. Therefore you can be assured that using a CF bulb is environmentally friendly even if it contains a tiny bit of mercury.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
