I know there are some cases of lead poisoning in the county next to the one I live in, but all six of those are kids who live in pre-1940s homes. And I am not advocating that we not require toys to meet certain safety standards. But does anyone else think that people are freaking out WAY too much over this?

That's why there are all the recalls. To prevent the lead poisoning.
Lead Accumalates Slowly It is about many lead sources or a constant lead source over time that causes lead poisoning. The only way to tell if a kid has a high lead level is to test their blood and their blood may not be tested if they aren’t showing obvious symptoms of lead poisoning. The cincher is that many medical professionals do not recognize the signs of lead poisoning even when it is very acute.
You aren't freaking... just get some lead test kits and test some of your kids toys... dishes (tea sets, etc). Concentrate on red and yellow paint, glossy paints, and glossy ceramics. The swab type test kits are available at many hardware stores (Lowes and Home Depot in US).

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
