As far as I know, there is not any kind of national organization for animal welfare. As far as REALLY helping animals by passing better laws, etc.Looks like the strength of a national organization would help? That would be great except most animal rescue groups don't really get along with each other. They have similiar beleifs and goals but there are always a few things they don't agree on. It's just like any other group of people, there will always be somone that goes against the crowd.
If only we could all agree then the animals wouldn't suffer anymore.
There are a few... The Humane Society of the US comes to mind, but there are others as well. The problem is that most of us are charities, entirely funded by what little support we can manage to raise and staffed by volunteers. The others tend to be city-run.
For charitable groups like the one I work with, just finding the budget to meet the day-to-day expenses is quite a challenge. Also, the larger a group becomes, the more difficult it is to run. Right now, we have a network of volunteers across the DFW metroplex who assist us in pulling animals from kill shelters and fostering them and/or providing medical attention for their rehabilitation needs. It's difficult enough to manage people in several different counties and coordinate getting the animals to the places that are best suited for them.
Some of our volunteers have driven hours (literally) just to pull an animal from a shelter where it was about to be euthanized. If we had to cover any more territory there would be more and more cases falling through the cracks because we just couldn't get there in time or because we didn't happen to have a volunteer in that area who was available to help. We also do a lot of work with animal control and local lawmakers to try to keep the animals' best interests in the picture when it's time to change zoning or approve new animal-related legislation.
We've made some headway on the local level, but couldn't begin to have the funding or staff we'd need to lobby on the national or even state level. In the end, it's best to leave such things to groups like the HSUS or the many others who are already set up and funded for such things, while we work to change things close to home. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
