No, the 2012 "event" is merely the date that the Mayan calendar begins a new cycle. Scholars generally agree that the end of the Mayan calendar does not signify any type of "end of the world" scenario, although conspiracy theorists and paranoids will try to convince you otherwise with "proof" from various unrelated sources such as scriptures, etc. For example, the year 2000 was the end of the millenium based on the Christian calendar, which made the birth of Jesus to be year 0. That doesn`t mean that there is any kind of relation between the date and any type of real-world event.
