There are plenty... There are even manufacturers (such as Voodoo PC) that specialize in custom-building. Has there been an attempt to custom make a MacOS X compatible mobile computer? I am sure there has been, but not commercially; Apple would eat alive anyone who tried it.In fact, one of the first things Steve Jobs killed when he returned to Apple as CEO was Mac cloning (a program whereby third-party manufacturers could obtain licenses to build Mac-compatible computers and sell them under their brand names).
Technologically, it shouldn't be an insurmountable problem though. MacOS X is really not an operating system; it's a windowing environment and a set of utilities running on top of FreeBSD (hence, by the way, the letter X; it signifies that it's an X Window replacement). Yes and no. There are repalacement and upgrade parts for existing models, but there are very few generics. The problem is, there is no standard for laptop expansion bays similar to the 5.25" and 3.5" standards on desktops.
Every manufacturer has their own chassis, on which they arrange the parts as best they can, and expandability typically gets sacrificed in favor of miniaturization...
