First of all, backlinks can never hurt - when they aren't generated in chunks of hundreds within minutes. As you have correctly noticed automatic systems could work against you.

On the other hand noone could ever prove whether you paid to get backlinks, but the amount you pay for these is rather important because it can lead to being cheated. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
