Yes, I've always been attracted to the classics. When younger I used to like the lengthy symphonies but as I got older I found the treasures of smaller groups as in chamber music, duets, trios, etc. Mostly I gravitate to violin music. Baroque/JS Bach has its niche too but for me I'm drawn to something like the "Goldberg Variations" transposed from piano solo to a stringed group as done by Sitkovetsky a few decades ago.

Am also keen on opera, but later. youtube.com/watch?v=rMTCuaJaBwY com/watch? V=rMTCuaJaBwY.

Dear Goldie,Thanks a lot for you fine answer. For a yearly Music Festival in Torroella de Montgrí (Province of Girona) in Spain / Catalonia I was asked to invite Yehudi Menuhin with an English letter to be sent to London with details of the program prepared for him. I assisted to the fabulous Concert he gave in the Church of Sant Genis and there I became very emotional.

On the same place where Spanish children - as my wife Carmen was - were obliged to have a hammer and on White Thursday had to beat the steps of the Altar shouting: 'Death to the Jews and the Free Masons'. The horrible dictator Franco had made a Concordat with the Vatican that - in those days many years ago - hated Jews. I also wrote poetry about this let's say 'miraculous musician'.

What a talent and what a kind, gentle and able musician we had as a guest on that Sunday in August! Janosj 11 months ago jpg.

Yesterday I found an entire video, full-length, of the "Goldberg Variations", so thought you'd like to hear it:zoomers.ca/video/bach-goldberg-variation... saw Menuhin only twice in my lifetime about two decades ago in Toronto, Canada. It does take two or three generations for people to put the effects of war behind them. Sorry to hear of your wife's experiences.

Being in Canada and a growing youngster at the time, I missed the direct destructiveness of war years. Ca/video/bach-goldberg-variations-bwv.

P.S. - My name is "goldie080" and not Goldie who happens to be another member here in Askville. Just a minor correction. ;-) .

Only in passing. But I do not see how one can beat Bach. S range and complexity is incredible.

Perhaps Mozart is another to consider. I also like Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. But I do not expect others to like them as I do.

I usually listen to Bruebeck. Someetimes I like Enya or Sheryl Crow.

You have described your point of view AND JOY very well. Classical music like Baroque and Jazz reach very often the same high quality. Dave Brubeck for instance had a classical education in music on a Conservatory but changed his way and became a pianoplayer of Jazz, one of the best I know.

Thanks a lot for your answer and the confirmation I was looking for. I like people who really do love good music as long as it is original and has quality like Bach and Brubeck both have. Janosj 11 months ago jpg.

Thanks for your compliment. I learned to love many types of classical music from one of my brothers. The exception was Opera.

Mozart composed Don Giovanni and that became the only Opera I really loved as a whole. I started learning to play the piano later in life. I used a Hungarian course existing of four books.

Erna Czovek wrote this exceptionally easy course where all 88 keys were used from the beginning. The first year my teacher came to the Dutch village of Berlicum in the Province Noord Brabant where I lived with my family. My wife and two daughters took also his classes.

He was a very good and patient teacher. As my work in publishing became more and more International I had to change my rhythm of life and learning. I continued playing the piano in Spanish Catalonia.

When my spine gave in, I had to study easier but always with love for music. I also played the flute and was for a short time drummer of a Band of the company I worked for. Janosj 11 months ago .

I have been slow with Opera, but I do include a lot in that category. The first one I studied was La Boheme and there are parts that are absolutely beautiful. But I really do not like the story that much.

Gilbert and Sullivan are about my speed. I laugh and laugh at their dialog. I even count the movie "Popeye" as an operetta and think the songs are good.

Dear Gary,I am glad you are for books, as I have been a publisher who 'makes' those books, sometimes from a sudden idea! My question as such was also to find out how many people in ASKVILLE love real quality music. Thanks for your activities that give me a good answer.

Have a nice weekend to come! **************************************************These flowers are named 'Viooltjes' in my native Dutch. The word means 'little violins'.

My wife Carmen loves flowers and I do as a born Dutchman... janosj 11 months ago jpg.

That would be "baroque," and J.S. Bach is one of my favorites, too.

Thanks for your fine answer and the video you enclosed. Just great! One of my dreams is to have on a day a personal chat with you.

What you sent to me is of the highest quality I know. The organ-player who supported the choir in a church in Eindhoven - where the choir sang a Holy Mass every Sunday - was called Richard Kroes. Now I have been able to play a simple organ in the local church of Sant Genis in the village - Torroella de Montgrí - where my wife and I live.

Again: THANKS! Janosj 11 months ago jpg.

As far as I know, Classical is the basis of Real Music" "Well, the 'good' people of Askville have done it again! " "Why do some people in Askville do this? " " is askville still with the same people" "All who are interested in making Askville a better place and us better people for being here..sign up and let's discuss" "How many people are actually on Askville?" "Why do some people on Askville" "How many people are using askville now?

How many were using askville before?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
