No, they weren't. My parents had done well in life through hard work. Having lived through the Great Depression, they had a strong distaste for people who flauted their wealth and status.

Also, having lived through the Great Depression, my parents were very big into saving money. They weren't cheap, but they were frugal and didn't like to spend money foolishly. My dad did splurge a bit on his hutning rifles and shotguns and my mother bought a new car every other year, but other than that, they lived relatively modestly, preferring to invest their money instead.
