Similar questions: victim corporate cutbacks downsizing.
I have been in the past - although "victim" wouldn't be the term I would use My company reorganized and downsized. I was managing 12 people in a training group. THat position was eliminated , as were two of the training positions.
I was able to hang on at the company by taking an inside sales (phone sales position) and as my old department reorganized, all re-applied for their positions - at that time, I re-applied as well and got one of the ten training positions. I did take a cut in pay and certainly in prestige, but my life didn't end. I certainly had less headaches.
I was also not considered for re-enlistment in the army as we reduced our forces in the late 70s and early 80s under President Carter. That's kind of a down sizing. That forced me to find a job and get prepped to go to school.

I was downsized three years ago, and at first it was ROUGH! I had caught my division of a major corporation in illegal activity, and blew the whistle on them to corporate. They fired the division president, and three months later I was downsized, along with the corporate attorney I had worked with on this.
The company has been buying more and more junk from China and phasing out production here, so the cutback was legitimate, and no way for me to prove it was retaliation for whistleblowing. I had been there 24 years, and was one year short of being able to draw early SS. My daughter, a licensed financial advisor, gave me advice on how to handle my defined benefit retirement plan (took the cash buy-out and invested it through her in mutual funds) and I had a small 401K which I invested into a nice portfolio of mutual funds as well.
When I checked and saw what early SS would be, I realized I did not have to go back to work! During the year before SS kicked in, we were TIGHT! I looked for work, drew UEC, and also drew some $ through a special program that compensates workers whose jobs were eliminated by being exported to other countries.
We sold my car, and cashed in enough of my 401 to pay off the other bills, and I settled down into retirement. I LOVE IT! We went on motorcycle trips for a couple of years, and then a motorcycle wreck resulted in my breaking my leg, so I decided TOO OLD for that stuff anymore, so I sold the bike (it was unscathed!), took the money, and bought a used Cad.
It's a 99 Deville Concourse fully loaded in White Diamond, and we now travel in a bit more comfort. So - once again - what seemed to be a DISASTER turned out to be a blessing! Judy and I now spend ALL our time together, and we are both enjoying this new phase of life VERY much!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
