Are you representatives in Congress smarter than you or the average American?

I would say so, yes, as the majority of them are attorneys, which requires 6 years of college I believe. The average American is lucky to have a HS diploma.

Congressional Representative are people too People who run for political offices are not necessarily the smartest or most intelligent Americans. There are a few that are above average intelligence, will educated, and savvy. Then there are a whole bunch that got to where they are through privilege--trust fund kids that had nothing else to do that would satisfy their egos.

You have to be real capable or connected to get into Congress--unfortunately for us, most are just connected. If we were to change our election laws--eliminate the need for large amounts of money to get elected--we would see more average Americans in office with a lot more motivation to do things right. The amount of time and effort that the average elected official puts into getting reelected is so large, it is a wonder that they ever do their jobs--many of them don't do their jobs-hence, the current situation we find ourselves in--losing our jobs, dependent on other countries for basic things we used to provide for ourselves, and in the midst of a possible recession.

I believe that if Congress was composed of smart hard working folks, they could make sure that the Executive Branch of the Government could not damage our country as severely as they have. We need some real election reform and a couple rounds of elections where the voters have more to say about who gets elected. Lobbyists must go--voters must be heard..

Well... they are mostly rich dudes, so I guess they are smart, but " a people is no better than the government they elect" guess you could use that to reason, nope they aren't much smarter .

Intelligence and wisdom are not qualifications for public office unfortunately. The distribution of intelligence among politicians is probably no different than in the general population. We have a wealth of examples that prove this point.

But "street smarts", defined as an intuitive intelligence, shrewdness, or reasoning power not gained by formal education, is a clear asset if not a requirement. Moral flexibility seems to also be required. Sources: answers.com/street+smarts&r=67 .
