Yes, after I've talked it over with myself, I think that would be a good idea... Thats a good idea Rocketeer, but we would need a way to rate questions --which I would like but may be subject to the law of unintended consequences... like do people really want to rate questions as well as answers or would it discourage interesting, controversial, or fun questions... I guess someone at Askville could pick out really good questions since they do that for the Askville of the Day. Ha! , Now that I've talked it over with myself, I've come back to the starting point again.
Good idea, you've got my vote...
Yes... but you have no chance of winning that one Tsk tsk tsk. ;-) Sources: My Head .
Definitely It's true. Right now, askers kind of get the short end of the stick. There's no mechanism for measuring how good a question is, and there's no real reward for good questions.
Mind you, I don't know how they choose the existing AotD. I don't think it's really the one with the most best answers; I think there must be a large randomizing factor in it as well. But certainly you need to have more than a couple of best answers before you get into that lottery.
Perhaps we can judge the quality of a question by how many answers and discussion points it attracts. That's kind of crude, since lame easy questions will tend to attract a bunch of identical and simple answers. We might throw in another factor for the length of the answers.
Or perhaps just measure how many different users click on the question. We could let people vote for questions they like, but voting schemes are always inconvenient, and that inconvenience skews the results. That's why Google doesn't use a voting scheme.
They try instead to infer what's important by the way people actually use the pages. Such systems are always prone to being "gamed", though since Askville limits its users pretty drastically (it's hard -- but not impossible -- to set up a bunch of fake accounts) they might be able to control it reasonably well.
Askville is not set up to evaluate questions, just answer. I hope this helps.
I mean, in the past few days, we've have someone with as few as 3 and someone with as many as 45. I have 6, which seems to be a number I've seen a lot. I'm not a person who cares a ton for accolades, but I did see that they had been picking an AOD for a couple months now, and I never made the list, even though I've been on Askville since a couple months after it started, and I am on the all time leader board.
I think my stats are pretty good, clearly there are many who have far better stats than I do, but I think I've achieved some level of Askville "fame". So I thought eventually I would probably be picked, and sure enough, today I was. But long about a couple weeks ago when I first noticed that I hadn't been picked, I realized that I hadn't been answering a ton of questions.
Many weeks had gone by with few or no best answers (because I gave few or no answers at all). So, I kind of threw myself back into it, figuring that I'd probably have to have 5 or 6 best answers in the previous week before I'd get selected. Sure enough, today I'm AOD with 6 best answers last week.
So, does it have anything to do with # of best answers. Well the answer is probably yes AND no. I mean, I think it's probably more about "activity", if you've been visible in Askville, one method of doing so to be answering questions...and of course, we would want to assume there was some quality to the answers you gave...I mean anyone could go on and answer a bunch of questions with one sentence answers and build up 100 answers in a day, but not get a single best answer, that person would more likely be Askville nuisance of the day.
Also, I think there is a random element involved, I doubt the honored person is hand selected, but I'm guessing that there's some sort of random drawing where maybe you get 45 entries if you had 45 best answers and 6 entries if you had 6. I don't know exactly how it works, but I don't think it's Askviller for best answers, I just think it's the part of the profile they feature, because it's the most visible and measurable aspect to one's performance. But as for asking questions, other than the feedback you get from others who will send you a compliment saying "great question", you get one point per question answered, it really doesn't matter whether it's a great question or a stupid question.
Perhaps they should revamp everything to let answerers (and even others) rank your question on a 5 point scale and award you bonus points based on the average question quality, give that a percentage as well...you could even have question of the day for bonus points...like maybe you have 5 stars, everyone who wants can rank the question 1 to 5 stars. Your final ranking of # of stars is rounded up to give you a percentage of 1 star, 2 star...all the way up to 5 star questions. Then also at the end of each day, the question with the highest average ranking wins the question of the day, which could be featured on the homepage along with Askviller of the day, as determined by best answers.
I can see a number of ways this could work in fact. I was thinking along the lines of not averaging and going with the highest total point getter, but I kind of tend to think that's a lot like the most viewed questions/most popular questions. I guess if anything, I'd like to see them expand the blurb to say, AOD stats for the last 7 days: x best answers, x great answers, x good answers, x 5 star questions, x 4 star questions, x compliments received, x friends, x fans.
They could just use a random # generator to pick the featured Askviller of the day, maybe even put links to some of their Q's and A's, and basically allow anyone with at least one of each of these so there would be no zeros be eligible...(I mean at minimum it would be 1 best answer, 1 great answer, 1 good answer, 1 5 star Q, 1 4 star Q, 1 compliment received, 1 friend, 1 fan). You could also say, if you were using the Question of the Day some additional stats like "has achieved QOD 17 times!" You could put their coin totals (all time and last week), percentage of answers ranked as best (all time and last week), even count the # of posts to the discussion board.
Yes, you could do a lot more with AOD, but I'm still happy to have the honor bestowed upon me.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
