Back about a hundred years ago how far could an ordinary good conditioned horse be expected to travel in a day?

Some years ago I read an article in Western Horseman where this young boy was allowed to travel a circuit with his dad and I believe the distance was covered 100 miles. Marathon Grandad managed a livery stable that was 35 miles from home. An early start on his buckboard and a late return were typical. At least the horse had a few hours to rest between trips.

I doubt that a horse could do that daily. To cover a hundred miles, a horse would have to travel at 10 mph for 10 hours. That is asking a lot.

Grandad said that on one trip home a blizzard caught him. He said that if he hadn't had that buffalo robe with him, he would have frozen to death. I had forgotten that there were buffalo east of the Mississippi river..

50-100 miles. Well, since horses haven't changed much in the last hundred years, it would still be about the same today. Most endurance races/events held nowadays, for horses and riders who have trained to ride long distances, are over courses that are 50 to 100 miles long for one day's ride (10-12 hours).

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
