They didn't support imperialism or aggression from either side. But they'd been in no position to even if the had wanted to. No doubt many in Ireland did support, for example, the Axis attack on the Soviet Union as indeed did many in the US, Europe and around the world at the time.
Likewise many would have understood how the unjust treatment of the German people in the Versailles Treaty was a major reason for the war. As a small neutral country there would have taken much inspiration from the Finn's heroic repelling of the Soviet invasion, Many too disliked/hated Churchill (and his family) personally for his role in Ireland. But as a Constitutional democratically ran Republic Eire would not have fitted into the Axis either easily.
But bear in mind that Churchill threatened to invade the free State several times even as a neutral country. Unless the Axis powers would fight a big battle for Ireland, highly unlikely, they would have been taken over pronto. Churchill, never anything but an arch British Imperialist, would have loved to have an excuse.
They would have been in no position to defend themselves. But usually most small countries stand back and let the bigger ones at it as a rule when in comes to conflict. WWII was no different on the whole.
For Ireland the preservation of its of hard fought for albeit limited Independence was the best it could have hope for in those dark years. That in itself was no mean feat.
Ignore both The ONE and Orla C- Both have their own hateful, ignorance fueled agendas and neither are concerned with historical accuracy. De Valera was proven a worthy guardian of Irish Independence during the war, serving" neither King nor Kaiser". That was the case no matter how many mendacious war mongering Commies or anti-Irish Brits or Loyalist say otherwise to this day.
He was actually one of the world's first leaders to recognize the State of Israel. Funny that for a "Nazi sympathiser".
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
