The Republicans have always been about fear of what might happen if we don't elect them. Years ago it was the USSR and China, the threat of a communist takeover of the world. When the USSR collapsed the Republicans desperately looked around for another threat and 9/11 provided it.
Communism justified enormous increases in military spending and US imperialism around the world. Now it's terrorism. In fact terrorism is better because there's really no way to fight it.
We're spending trillions to develop big, elaborate weapons systems that would have been useful in WWII but aren't useful at all against a guerrilla threat. We should have learned this in Vietnam! ISIS is the best/worst threat for the Republicans.
They can hide among the general population so you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys. So, just as in Vietnam, the idea is to just kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out. We can only accomplish so much through aerial bombing.
So what do we do then? MORE BOMBING!
Most societies are divided into a party that wants change (the more liberal party) and one that is afraid of change (the conservatives). The liberal party is generally more intellectual and the conservative party is more anti-intellectual. The conservative party is big on national defense and magnifies our perception of threat, whether of foreign aggressors, immigrants, terrorists, or invading ideologies like Communism.
To a conservative, the world really is a frightening place.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
