Oh, that again. I know about the story you are talking about, I remember it very well and, as usual, it was misreported in order to look more interesting. First, she was not threatened with expulsion, she was sent back to her home once.
She was not alone, she was with girls who had previously not respected the laicity rules and who had generally a proselytist behaviour. They were collectively asked to come back with more appropriate clothes. Indeed the director made a mistake and may even have abused her power but the girl was also at fault for not coming back at all (which was not what she was asked for, she was not excluded).
And spare me these paranoid interpretations, of course laicity is not meant to destroy religious freedom, it's meant to preserve both freedom of religion and freedom from religion while at the same time guaranteeing that religion (or hatred toward a religion) cannot be used as a reason to create unequality in regard to the law. Of course there can be mistakes or abuse, just like a court can make mistakes and sentence an innocent or just like medias can abuse their power and misreport stories to get more audience. Yet you are not saying we should stop having justice courts or medias.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
