Can I have health insurance break before getting another health insurance?

Here is my situation. I joined company "A" in 2000 and I left the company "A" in Sep 2007. I had group insurance from company "A" until Sep 2007.

I joined company "B" in Oct 2007 but the company "B" did not provide the health insurance and asking me to stay with Cal-Cobra. Still, I did not send my Cal-Cobra election form and debating myself whether to have it or not. I got offer from company "C" and I am willing to join company "C" in December 2007.

Company "C" is a big company and the company "C" insurance will be starting as soon as I join the company "C". About my health condition, I don't have any precondition and even my family member don't have any precondition. My question is, do I need to take Cal-Cobra and pay 3400 USD for Oct 2007, Nov 2007 to keep my insurance up to date before joining company "C". Is it safe not to take the Cal-Cobra and have 2 months break in health insurance coverage?

Unfortunately the only honest answer is no. Simply put, you are rolling the dice that the neither you nor a family member will have a catastrophic medical event between now and when your new insurance starts....If that were to happen you would likely experience a crippling financial burden over and above whatever health concerns you and your family may be dealing with-- It is already mid Nov 2007....when are you joining the company in December? If we are talking a couple of weeks then yes I would probably take the risk....

Speaking from experience... I was with a large company as well and had Kaiser coverage. I left that job and went to another job that didn't offer medical insurance, and I was in no position to pay ridiculously high rates of $500 per month either (single male). So, I let it lapse.

Months later, I tried to get Kaiser Insurance on my own, and they actually denied me because I was honest on the application and indicated that I had a pre-existing back injury (nothing HUGE - just occassional back pain that I treat with a Chiro for). Six months after that, I got hired by the State - and was given Kaiser medical insurance. Not a peep from them about my prior application or anything... So, the question is really: Are you okay with not having medical insurance for the next two months?

Are you relatively healthy and rarely go to hospitals unless you feel like youre dying? Or, are you a hypocondriac that goes to the hospital once a month to get attention? Or, are you seriously ill and might require hospitalization over the next two months?

If youre like me and you hate doctors and going to hospitals, then I think youre perfectly safe dodging the $3400 bill (Im hoping thats for you and a family, not just you alone! ) Of course, if you have a family, then perhaps the insurance is worth it - you don't know what your kids can get into... As long as you don't think you or anyone in your family will need to go to the doctor or hospital in that time, You should be fine letting it lapse. Even pre-existing conditions are usually covered if the insurance is through your employment. I have done this many times when I was younger and in good health without having any reprecussions from it.

If something comes up, like the flu, you can always go to the doctor and pay out of your pocket without it affecting your ability to get insurance with your new employer, and it will save you a lot of money. The only thing that you should worry about is if you are on medicine on a regular basis, because some meds can be very expensive when you are paying out of pocket.

You can retro COBRA or Ca-COBRA if you get sick for 60 days, Indeally, you do not want a significant break in health insurance for 63 days or longer. Htm.

It is a gamble. I always bought the insurance and never have used it But you never know.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
